Sid’s overhaul .

Well the mechanical overhaul is complete now on my 1950’s Sid Mottram fixed wheel bike.

The overhaul included swapping the original Williams chainset with an alloy stronglight one .

The front wheel was respoked along with some new grease for the wheel bearings front and rear and some new brake cables and pads .

The original paintwork and it’s patina was given a quick de dusting and then a t cut and polish to try and bring the shine .

The blue original guards have been replaced by a pair of black “sovereign” ones and in all fairness I think they look great.

The 48 X 18 fixed gearing has been tried and tested on my two other fixed wheel bikes.

Next job is to get some period ribbed bar tape .

Sid Mottram Fixed gear .

I purchased this Sid Mottram a couple of weeks ago from the daughter of the original owner .

As far as she could remember it was bought by her late father in the 1950’s after a trip to see Sid Mottram in Leicester shop .

Through the covering of dust and grime built up over the years of storage I could see a nice bike lurking below .

It’s fitted with a mix of original and later components ie Williams chainset , wienmann 27″alloy rims , GB drop bars and a Reynolds 531 stem that had been wrapped up in black bar tape . Thankfully the constrictor lamp bracket hadn’t been covered as well .

Once I removed the tape I could see the damage to the glorious chromed stem that years of tape had caused ie lots of flaking chrome.

My plan is to swap the cranks for a set of stronglight items along with a 19 toothed fixed rear cog . The front wheel will be respoked . It will also need some new cables and brake pads .

I am unsure if it’s a Wally Green or Mercian built frame . But either way I am looking forward to covering some miles on it.

Old Faithful stands in

This morning’s ride started with a flat rear tyre on the Dunelt fixed gear .

Luckily I hadn’t even left the garage and with damp underfoot conditions I wanted to use a bike with guards.

So the only other bike that fitted the bill was my daily commuter the Marin Bear Valley .

I decided straight away to change my intended route to take in the cycle path that runs from Thrapston to Rushden lakes.

This meant that the first 15 miles were all on tarmac and then the next 6 and a bit were a mixture of smooth and rough gravel surfaces.

The Marin always gives me a smile no matter what it’s being used for . The homeward journey was another 7 miles of tarmac .

As I rode through Irchester I decided to do a lap of Irchester country park .

The ride ended up being just over 29 miles in length , I have no idea how long my smile was but it certainly stayed for most of the day.

Ribble Audax bar swap

I picked up this very lightly used Ribble a few weeks back . The previous owner claimed to have only used it for about 100 miles .

As you can see it had originally been built with flat bars and brifters that only allowed 12 of the 14 gears to be selected due to a mismatch of components , I tried to sort this but couldn’t find those extra pair of gears .

Whilst trying it out a couple of other issues became apparent , it’s front caliper Allen key bolt was only just reaching the caliper threads and the headset spacer arrangement wasn’t tensioning the headset bearings .

Once this pair of issues was sorted I decided to swap the flat bars for a set of drops. First job was to replace the original rear wheel and fit a new 8 speed cassette and a set of NOS Claris sti units .

I had initially fitted a riser stem but soon swapped that out for a flat one . and started to cable up the gears and brakes .

After a bit of setting up it was time for some test miles to see what it felt like . All was good so next job is to fit the matching fr wheel and to sort out the squeaky fr mudguard .

Then once I am happy with everything I can finish it off with some new bar tape .

 

New jacket Time again

Well this week has seen the arrival of my latest new jacket , after trying products from Altura , Endura and Polarias i decide this time to go for a Proviz .

Why Proviz i hear you all shout , the main reason is i am fed up of watching the reflective panels slowly and surely peel off my last 3 or 4 jackets .

So when i asked Proviz i was told that they an integral part of the jacket not just an added extra and can’t peel off .

I am really impressed by the Nightrider 2 and how reflective it is . I am intending to use it on this weekend rides .
