Ribble Audax bar swap

I picked up this very lightly used Ribble a few weeks back . The previous owner claimed to have only used it for about 100 miles .

As you can see it had originally been built with flat bars and brifters that only allowed 12 of the 14 gears to be selected due to a mismatch of components , I tried to sort this but couldn’t find those extra pair of gears .

Whilst trying it out a couple of other issues became apparent , it’s front caliper Allen key bolt was only just reaching the caliper threads and the headset spacer arrangement wasn’t tensioning the headset bearings .

Once this pair of issues was sorted I decided to swap the flat bars for a set of drops. First job was to replace the original rear wheel and fit a new 8 speed cassette and a set of NOS Claris sti units .

I had initially fitted a riser stem but soon swapped that out for a flat one . and started to cable up the gears and brakes .

After a bit of setting up it was time for some test miles to see what it felt like . All was good so next job is to fit the matching fr wheel and to sort out the squeaky fr mudguard .

Then once I am happy with everything I can finish it off with some new bar tape .

Shorter

To compliment the red Aende I picked up last week . I added this late 70’s ex TT Shorter to my already overcrowded garage .

Original owner had it built to order at the age of 15 and paid in the region of £570 for it .

Do you reckon he got it cheaper due to holes in the bottom bracket shell and rear drop outs.

He also didn’t really have a gear set that are idea for hills .

Another Falcon week

Well the first week of 2019 was another week of clocking up some more miles on my bargain priced Falcon Explorer .

With another 60+ miles added to the total , I am still enjoying riding this very basic bike .

I am really surprised by the ride quality of this bike and I am starting to think how much better would it ride with better quality components .

At some point I want to replace the rear rack for a lighter aluminium one , but I need to work out what fittings I need first .

How far can you go on £12 ?

I reckon we would cover about 60 miles in our car on £12 of petrol at the current £1.16 per litre .

So far I have covered about the same amount of miles on my recent Falcon Explorer 12 acquisition .

Looking at the date stamps on the hubs it’s an early 90’s bike and which looks like it has led an easy life .

This bike will take on the role of my winter / wet weather bike until I get my Marin back on the road .

So far I have swapped the flat bar’s for a set of butterfly bar’s , adjusted the brakes , pumped up the tyres and wiped the dust off it .

This afternoon I have swapped the original tyres for some used Schwalbe Marathons and re greased the hubs .

The tale of 2 bikes

In the last few weeks I have picked up 2 bikes that were both about 3  – 4 years old and neither one had covered more than 200 miles each

So my question is why do people go out and buy a £500 + new bike and then use it for less than 200 miles before putting them in to storage and not using them again ?

IMG_20180925_080152324

One of these bike was bought to do the London to Brighton ride on so it covered about 54 miles and then got stored for 2 years before the owner decided to part with it for an awful lot less than he originally paid for it .

Whilst the other one had a cycle computer that showed less than 150 miles on it in total and according to the original owner he used it a lot in the first year then a lot less in the 2nd year before getting a puncture from where onwards it sat unused till he sold it at a loss as he needed the space it was taking up all whilst he was paying £35 per month to use the local gym and do a weekly spin class !!

1955 hercules Aston Tourist

Added another 1950’s bike to my collection the other night a very original 1955 Hercules Aston Tourist .

IMG_20181003_171422437

I have seen a few of it’s sportier sibling the Aston Club come up for sale before but have never seen an Aston Tourist .

IMG_20181002_200143997

It should clean up nicely if that is what i decide on . Having given it a couple of short laps around the block i can’t believe how smooth and well it rides apart from slightly buckled rear wheel .
